Are you a Marketer or an Entrepreneur?

There was an interesting thread created at the Third Tribe Forum last week…Are you a Marketer or an Entrepreneur? [By Kairostcheck]

Third Tribers came up with some great responses. This summary of some of my favourite responses really demonstrates what gems there are in the Third Tribe Forum. If you haven’t asked yourself this question yet, you might want to consider what you are really online for.

A quote by Sir Richard Branson

I didn’t want to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to be a journalist. I just found that I had to be an entrepreneur to get people to read my magazine. [StumbleRum]

On Success

It’s all about And. If you try to become an entrepreneur and you refuse to become a very skilled marketer, you will probably find that success is frustratingly elusive. [Sonia]

One or the Other

Entrepreneurs are always marketers, but not every marketer is an entrepreneur. [Brian]

Peter Drucker quote

Business is two things: marketing and innovation. If either component is missing, there is no business. [jdrohn74]

Internet Marketing definition

I think the term “internet marketing” is too vapid and one-dimensional…I prefer to think of my work as “media publishing”. Creating various formats of content and distributing it through the right channels to find the market. [marceglon]

What and How we do things

The entrepreneur is what we do/who we are: writer, designer, coach, consultant, artist …
The marketer is how we communicate what we do: blogging, sales copy, tweets, guest posts, collaborations …

How do you make a respectable living doing what you love, enjoy and are good at…while making a meaningful contribution to other people’s lives in an honest and authentic way? [taraagacayak]

On Selling

My tactic … is to never SELL. I educate. [lkpetrolino]

Entrepreneur definition

On Wiki:

“The word entrepreneur is often synonymous with founder. Most commonly, the term entrepreneur applies to someone who creates value by offering a product or service, by carving out a niche in the market that may not exist currently. Entrepreneurs tend to identify a market opportunity and exploit it by organizing their resources effectively to accomplish an outcome that changes existing interactions within a given sector.

Observers see them as being willing to accept a high level of personal, professional or financial risk to pursue opportunity.” [ash2010]

Selling Vs Giving

The word MARKET or MARKETER means “One that sells goods or services in or to a market, especially one that markets a specified commodity” . In that case we are all marketers. Entrepreneurs chooses to market for themselves.

PS the word sell comes from the old English word sellar as in to GIVE. [darren monroe]

For Third Tribers

If You Are Not a Third Triber

You might want to learn more about this community …

The Three Tribes

Internet Marketers… use aggressive hype and obnoxious tactics to fool people into believing there really is a “get rich quick” magic bullet.

Social Media Cool Kids… reject hype and aggressive sales tactics in favor of relationships, community, and value . . . and yet seem to have taken a vow of poverty along the way.

Third Tribe…a big (and growing) middle tribe, one that avoids spammy IM approaches while having no problem asking for the sale and making money.

Really nice thoughts. Here are definitions I got from dictionary.com. A marketer is one that sells goods or services in or to a market, while an entrepreneur is a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, esp. a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk. With these definitions, I would want to be considered an entrepreneur, there’s more depth and heart in it rather than just being a marketer.

Definitely sounds like the entrepreneur can be away from the business more than a marketer, more risk though but more reward (potentially). Good of you to look that up.

everybody wants to be an entrepreneur and have their own business…but there are things that a marketer can do which an entrepreneur cannot..in that case the entrepreneur has to listen to the marketer in order for his business to have high sales and earn profits..so it doesn’t matter who wants to be in depth or who wants to be a boss…marketer and entrepreneur both have their separate important places..and they both need each other at the same time..no one can deny that..

Good point on listening to the marketer – as long as you have your hand securely on your wallet :-)

It’s easy to get discouraged in the beginning. Your site looks great. Once you start making some money with your blog or notice you are really making a difference in people’s lives – or whatever else drives you – feel the hunger, energy, satisfaction, joy, etc of that moment and use it to fuel you to go on. It’s okay to rest. I found that I was my greatest pressure and worked out that if I didn’t blog for a week and my ranking went down or some visitors decided not to visit again it was okay because I needed my sanity and my own time. Everyone has their ups and downs.

If you find you are ‘lazy’ then work out when you are energetic and just work on your blog then. If blogging isn’t for you, don’t force it. You can do lots of other things online to earn money. Blogging is time consuming. Marketing and entrepreneurship is necessary for any online venture from freelancing to domain name flipping. It takes creativity and motivation. Get over your first 12 months and evaluate whether blogging is for you. If you are still doing it and it isn’t detracting from your life too much you will reap the rewards from staying in the market each year. It’s like Chinese bamboo – it’s takes years to reap a harvest sometimes.

I’m in marketing with a minor in entrepreneurship. You can have the best business mind and the best business model, but you can’t do anything until you attract customers.

It is veeery rare to get what you want, what you crave for, without doing something that does not interest you. “I didn’t want to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to be a journalist. I just found that I had to be an entrepreneur to get people to read my magazine. [StumbleRum]“. I totally agree cos now I am teaching at a private school to pay for my studies ;]
