Winners: Tell Us What You Need @ Thesis Theme HQ Competition

5 Apr 10

The following 5 Thesis Theme sites are the lucky winners of the Tell Us What You Need @ Thesis Theme HQ Competition and will be featured in Thesis Theme site reviews in the coming months:

Most Original

Bill @ Thesis Styles

You could consider a post that looks into the future of Thesis. How do you think Thesis 2.0 will look and behave? Will Thesis keep ahead of the pack of WP themes trying to catch up to Thesis? What’s your crystal ball say about the future of Thesis? A post along that line might spark a few comments.

Most Useful

Gail @ Grow Map
…An FAQ section where you post the common activities anyone using WordPress and Thesis will want to know. I could make a long list of things I rely on my WordPress Ninja to do in all our Thesis blogs because I have no idea how to do them myself.

You could also include some great tips for beginning bloggers on things like why they should fill in the SEO section, how many keywords to use for SEO versus how many tags to add for WordPress, how to make your header image shareable on FriendFeed and StumbleUpon, how to get images to display side-by-side, how to easily add affiliate links within blog posts – the list is long and each page of unique content will make your blog easier to find.

Gail: Please let us know the names/urls of all of your Thesis Sites.

Most Detailed

Amanda @ Desert Book Chick

Extracts from Amanda’s entry:

…Can I suggest some no jargon, plain language how to tutorials and PDFs for things like:

  • adding social media buttons/feeds to side bars and posts
  • making changes to the header that go beyond how to change the css colour code (i.e.step-by-step instructions on how to add a header picture and make the header larger/wider/deeper)
  • switching the nav bar from the top of the header
  • customizing the look of posts

not assuming anything/any knowledge at all

I identified 9 things that I really wanted straightforward tutorials for (or very clear answers for) but had a devil of a time finding. I hope you don’t mind, but rather than repeating it all here, I’ll post the link: http://desertbookchick.com/?p=350 and you can have a read. It might give you some ideas for products or tutorials to help us mortals…

  • The absolute moron’s guide to setting up your Thesis theme and C-Panel host.
  • An idiot-proof guide to changing the Thesis theme header.
  • A really simple tutorial that shows how to add beautiful category/link/blogroll buttons to the sidebars.
  • A complete idiot’s guide to adding social media sharing buttons on sidebars and within posts.
  • A-So-Easy-Your-Dog-Could-Do-it guide to customizing posts.
  • Hold my hand and point me EXACTLY to my hostname, because Wordpress is humbugging me to update to 2.9.2.317pythagoras or whatever version it’s up to.
  • An iPhone app that actually works for self hosted Wordpress.org blogs.
  • A no-nonsense way to add a ‘contact’ button for an email address where I want it on the site – not in some predetermined place.
  • A moron’s guide to showing sidebars ONLY on the home page – not on post pages or other pages.

No winner for this category. Didn’t quite make that many comments before the end of March. Maybe next time.

Randomly selected …from a bizarre selection of daring comments

John @ Extreme John

I would have to say that I would really like to see more towards the uncommon Thesis Theme customization tutorials, there are some excellent ones out there but they are far and few between.

This gives me a chance to add tutorials on some of the more unusual customizations like animated skeleton head icons for bullets (only joking).

Honourable Mentions but no cigar

Thank you to everyone who provided suggestions.

In the followng months I will be reviewing the winners’ sites and writing about their suggested topics.

Hi Somone,
Hadn’t seen your post on what do people want, so I am trying to catch up a bit. I make changes on my blogs and often things are off center, too big, or show up completely different on Firefox, IE, and I am sure others. I don’t know coding so I am usually groping around in the dark. you did feature my http://thisoldbrain.net at one time as a mention, and I have changed it a lot since then. What I need, and I wonder about others, are tutorials that don’t assume I know the terms used and where exactly to put things. This is a lot easier on Thesis, which all of my blogs are, but it can still be a challenge and there is a ton of hit and miss.

I am working on a new blog now, called angerflex.com which I am going to develop into a membership site and I wonder if I am doing something wrong in the programming that would keep it from being seen by search engines etcetera.

Hi Mike, good to see you’re still going strong and expanding. If the search engines are appearing in your cpanel list of search engines on a daily basis you are doing well. I will add something in the new FAQ pages. Do you have any particular queries about your site? Feel free to add them here in the comments.
